The Lord Of The Rings are just about my favourite films ever so I’m not sure why it took me so long to read these。 In parts I feel that the films are better, the big battles, Helms Deep in particular felt almost like a minor event in the books, maybe that was down to the pacing too, with It happening halfway through and Frodo’s journey then being the latter half of the book。 The end of Return of the King is a weird one too, the whole return to the shire part feels tacked on and unnecessary。 Also The Lord Of The Rings are just about my favourite films ever so I’m not sure why it took me so long to read these。 In parts I feel that the films are better, the big battles, Helms Deep in particular felt almost like a minor event in the books, maybe that was down to the pacing too, with It happening halfway through and Frodo’s journey then being the latter half of the book。 The end of Return of the King is a weird one too, the whole return to the shire part feels tacked on and unnecessary。 Also think this confirms the fact that I’m terrible at reading series of books, I don’t have the attention span and it ends up taking me way too long。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I think I liked this the best of the three books。 Especially the last chapters when the Hobbits come back to the Shire。 I had forgotten about Frodo going off with Gandalf and Bilbo and the Elves to the Havens and I definitely cried。 The political bits about putting all the kingdoms in order were pretty boring though I have to admit! I cannot believe I read all three of these books aloud。 My nine year old son enjoyed them and the whole reading was a completely new way to experience this saga for I think I liked this the best of the three books。 Especially the last chapters when the Hobbits come back to the Shire。 I had forgotten about Frodo going off with Gandalf and Bilbo and the Elves to the Havens and I definitely cried。 The political bits about putting all the kingdoms in order were pretty boring though I have to admit! This was a really enjoyable trilogy, and it ranks right up there among my all-time faves。The writing style, in particular, was something I really relished。 Tolkien's descriptive style is extremely rich and poetic, and creates an immersive atmosphere that can be enjoyed in and of itself - regardless of what plot events are transpiring。I will say I found this volume was probably the weakest of the three, but it was still solid enough。 I wasn't a big fan of the 100+ page denouement, especially (vie This was a really enjoyable trilogy, and it ranks right up there among my all-time faves。The writing style, in particular, was something I really relished。 Tolkien's descriptive style is extremely rich and poetic, and creates an immersive atmosphere that can be enjoyed in and of itself - regardless of what plot events are transpiring。I will say I found this volume was probably the weakest of the three, but it was still solid enough。 I wasn't a big fan of the 100+ page denouement, especially (view spoiler)[the whole thing near the end with Saruman taking over the shire。 (hide spoiler)] Having said that, I guess when you write a fantasy trilogy that's among the best ever written you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want。Overall, the entire trilogy was an awesome read。 I can't recommend it enough to anyone who hasn't yet delved into it! 。。。more

These books were ROUGH as read alouds but the Sam/ Frodo relationship made it worth it。 Also the basic decency of hobbits in the most ridiculously evil of backdrops。 But was taken aback by the backed in racism/ colonialism that I never noticed reading it as a young person。 Had to call it out to the kids。 Not sure they really got it。 But the story is so so good that they hung in through some tough prose。 I didn't skim over much at all。 The story still captivates。 And the simple common man having These books were ROUGH as read alouds but the Sam/ Frodo relationship made it worth it。 Also the basic decency of hobbits in the most ridiculously evil of backdrops。 But was taken aback by the backed in racism/ colonialism that I never noticed reading it as a young person。 Had to call it out to the kids。 Not sure they really got it。 But the story is so so good that they hung in through some tough prose。 I didn't skim over much at all。 The story still captivates。 And the simple common man having the key to saving the world seemed a moral still worth sharing。 That a gardener, taking care of his friend, being decent, keeping everybody fed, planting trees, and doing the next right thing could help overcome the orcs, trolls, spiders and evil wizards is an ok storyline for my kids to keep in their heads。 Arrow shooting elves and hammer swinging dwarves are all fine and good, but a gardener and a pitiful ruined creature both have their role to play in the end。 I'm good with that as a take home message。 。。。more

Fell deeds, awake。 This was certainly my favorite of the trilogy on the reread。 Some of that was more likely to happen with all the arcs arriving at their terminus, but the pacing and character work are strongest (to my eye) in this final volume。 I particularly enjoyed- Eowyn and Faramir in the houses of healing- the hands of the king being the hands of the healer - Sam finding steel in himself to complete the task as he and Frodo approached Mt。 Doom even as hope died because he fully embraced t Fell deeds, awake。 This was certainly my favorite of the trilogy on the reread。 Some of that was more likely to happen with all the arcs arriving at their terminus, but the pacing and character work are strongest (to my eye) in this final volume。 I particularly enjoyed- Eowyn and Faramir in the houses of healing- the hands of the king being the hands of the healer - Sam finding steel in himself to complete the task as he and Frodo approached Mt。 Doom even as hope died because he fully embraced their responsibility - The self-betrayal of evil- The Eagle proclaiming the return of the king- Eowyn and Merry tag teaming the Witch King- Everyone’s brusqueness with the lore master in the houses of healing- Eomer and Aragorn meeting on the field of battle- Aragorn sending the men who didn’t have the strength of heart to reach the Black Gate to take another fortress, giving them a noble task within their own measure to achieveBut man。 Arwen really comes out of left field。 Thanks for amending that, Peter Jackson。 。。。more

Amazing!! First time reading the whole series through, and I love that parts of it are portrayed accurately in the movies, but there is so much more in the books! I love the details, and the world-building is phenomenal!

Such an amazing conclusion to this great trilogy! Unlike the first two books, this one is perhaps the one which is missing the most from the movies。 I loved Eowyn and Faramir's romance, and the fight for the Shire near the end。 There is so much to love about this book, both on a moral level and a fanciful level。 The world is brilliantly done, though I admit that so much of the names for things were impossible to pronounce。 The characters were complex for being such an epic story of good and evil Such an amazing conclusion to this great trilogy! While Harry Potter will always be my favorite fantasy story, I can see how this series is the foundation to how people write fantasy today。 The Return of The King is a great ending to a wonderful story。

This final volume is undoubtedly the one that renders the entire saga a masterpiece!
